The Government of Alberta has officially reopened applications for its widely recognized ‘Alberta is Calling’ campaign, with new incentives specifically aimed at attracting skilled construction workers to the province. As Alberta experiences strong economic growth and a booming housing market, there is an urgent need to expand the workforce in trades and construction-related fields.
New Incentives for Skilled Trades
As part of the renewed effort, the provincial government is offering up to $5,000 in relocation support for out-of-province workers moving to Alberta to work in construction and skilled trades. This financial incentive is intended to help cover the costs of moving, resettling, and transitioning into new job opportunities across the province.
The incentive package is open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents currently living outside Alberta who are qualified in trades such as carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, roofing, siding, framing, welding, and heavy equipment operation.
Premier Danielle Smith emphasized the importance of the construction sector in Alberta’s long-term infrastructure plans. “We are building homes, roads, schools, and hospitals. We need more hands on deck, and we want skilled workers to know that Alberta not only welcomes them but will support their move here,” she said.
Why Alberta?
The campaign promotes Alberta’s affordability, high wages, and unmatched lifestyle. With no provincial sales tax, competitive income tax rates, and a significantly lower cost of housing compared to cities like Vancouver and Toronto, Alberta is becoming an attractive option for workers and families looking to relocate.
The “Alberta is Calling” website features a job portal, relocation tools, and information on living in cities such as Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer, and Lethbridge. It also highlights the province’s natural beauty, vibrant communities, and strong job market — especially in construction, healthcare, and technology.
Who Can Apply
To be eligible for the relocation incentive, applicants must:
- Currently reside outside Alberta,
- Be legally allowed to work in Canada,
- Have experience or credentials in a high-demand construction trade, and
- Provide proof of employment or a job offer from an Alberta employer.
The program is part of Alberta’s broader workforce strategy to fill over 100,000 job vacancies expected over the next few years, many of them in the construction and skilled trades sectors.
